All retailers should be able to trace the origins of their business back to a particular time and place when a need was answered with a range of products. Before the age of globalisation, retailers served the needs of local customers with locally produced products, many of which had their own regional specific qualities either in the materials used or the skills used to turn those materials into a saleable product.
Often the same people both produced and sold the goods they offered and traditional methods were created in styles, recipes and materials. These businesses were not just the lifeblood of the local community but also a window into the culture and traditions of that community.
That’s why whenever we travel abroad we look for gifts and souvenirs which reflect the place, people and culture we have visited. These gifts can provide pleasant memories of our holiday for many years and give our friends and families a taste of the part of the world we have been lucky enough to visit.
In recent years though the task of finding a genuine local gift has become more and more difficult. For all of the benefits one might argue globalisation has brought, small, local businesses have found it increasingly difficult to survive in the new global marketplace. With their disappearance the world has lost traditional skills and products and in turn the culture of the local community has suffered as well.
In creating the In Your Pocket shop, we want to highlight and promote the work of local manufacturers and promote the things that they make. In doing so we hope not only that you are able to find a local gift to take home with you but we also hope to support the work of local businesses and protect local skills and traditions.
The In Your Pocket shop offers a collection of the most interesting and attractive gifts which have been produced locally and/or have a local theme. In an age of shrinking baggage allowances, we can also deliver your gift to your hotel or home so that there’s never a reason not to take a piece of the country home with you.
We’ll show you the work of local artists and tradesmen, highlight their work and make the gift you want easy to find and even easier to buy.
Don’t forget think local and everyone from you to the local business will be happier for it.
